Gibbs to return to Redskins

ASHBURN, Va. (Jan. 7, 2004) -- In a stunning move, Joe Gibbs will return as coach of the Washington Redskins, a team he led to three Super Bowl titles.

Gibbs agreed to a five-year contract, he announced on his NASCAR racing team's web site.

"The desire to coach has always been with me, even after being away from the game for 11 years," Gibbs said.

The 63-year-old Gibbs coached the Redskins from 1981-92 before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. He has been adamant over the years about not wanting to coach again, although he has retained NFL connections. He is currently a minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons.

Gibbs was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

In seeking a replacement for Steve Spurrier, who resigned last week, the Redskins were known to have interviewed three candidates: former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, former Minnesota coach Dennis Green and Seattle defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes.

Gibbs' racing teams have been among the most successful in NASCAR with two Winston Cup championships in the past four seasons. Bobby Labonte took the title in 2000 and Tony Stewart in 2002.

Gibbs' oldest son, J.D., is president of Joe Gibbs Racing. The former coach's youngest son, Coy, finished 14th last season in the Busch Series standings.

non è che magari Walsh, ma magari anche seifert abbiano voglia di tornare nella Baia!!!

Da Pellerossa non posso far altro che gioire, tanto peggio di così......:)
E poi sicuramente ci saranno una valanga di nuovi stimoli che smuoveranno la franchigia ultimamente poco esaltante....
Certo, Gibbs sarà un pò arruginito... però come non dare fiducia all'uomo degli ultimi successi?

bella notizia davvero,grande Joe Gibbs, ci vuole proprio lui per risollevare i poveri pellerossa,quando avevo letto che il primo nome che avrebbero sentito era J.Fassel mi erano venuti un po i brividi, per carita ha giocato anche un sb ma quest'anno certe chiamate sono state veramente terrificanti..

Mi raccomando l'anno prossimo Punkish....uniti per sostenere i Redskins...quest'anno ero solo soletto nel forum.....:o
